7 Degrees of Kevin Bacon: Seeking Company to Join

One afternoon I opened my email and saw this subject line: "I'd like to work for a company like yours someday”

Iwas intrigued, shocked, and quite humbled by the subject line. There is something truly magical that happens when you’re surprised by a random act of kindness. Simple notes, in my opinion, are quite frankly often overlooked as a way to share a human connection and can make someone feel so special- just because.  I did not know the sender and upon opening I was so flattered that someone had taken time out of their busy day to tell us how we have impacted them.

Immediately my next thought was how did this person find us and what did we do that motivated them to reach out? And so it began, I couldn’t help myself, I had to know!

So here’s how the plot thickened over the next several weeks….

I became enamored with finding out the original source and how many times it had changed hands. The power of a simple piece of content about our company culture (GOTTA LOVE INBOUND!) had reached someone on the other side of the ocean who felt compelled to reach out about our company culture.

Here’s where seven degrees of Kevin Bacon comes in: she lived overseas, whose boss was in the US who had given her our company culture deck from a trade show she attended, who had received it from someone in the Midwest, who had received it from someone in New England who knew me! The deck traveled electronically across 2 countries and 6 states circling all the way back to my inbox.

The best part was we got to meet and geek out on Zoom about company culture, ideas, benefits, how to stay connected and BE MORE HUMAN. Two strangers across the ocean helping each other. I’m sharing our company culture deck because my hope is maybe it will help someone else with their culture program, see a new perspective on why and how to put focus on people, start a conversation or simply to make a new unexpected friend.

Company culture goes far deeper and wider than some may realize in influencing others to be HAPPY at work and in LIFE- far outside of just your own internal team.

So I challenge you, if you had a blank slate, what would you do to build a HAPPY culture?

What does that landscape look like? Here are some ideas and our current programs to spark some ideas (Please also feel free to email us additional culture ideas or other outside the box programs- we’re always on the lookout for ways to continue to add more work/ life balance.)

At Market Veep we think of company culture as a living breathing part of our business.

In fairness, we did not always have the breadth of programs we offer now. We started small and as we grew, our programs grew. Some of our first culture events involved team bike rides, painting pumpkins or dressing up as a salad for Halloween. Many times when we talk to others they ask about the financial cost and impact to budget- here’s our perspective- Happy Team, Happy Clients, Happy Life- how can we financially quantify happiness? Isn’t it worth it? Life is just too short and we spend too much time working to not have fun while we are doing it.

We’re constantly evolving from feedback, reflecting on what's working and what's not, and how it impacts the clients and in turn the team. All of which is developed around open and transparent conversations built on trust, regardless if that feedback is good or bad- they are both equally important! At our core we are humans first and marketers second. ;) We’re looking forward to hearing your company culture stories, ideas and being inspired by your team.
